Omara Portuondo getting set for Omara Portuondo 80th Birthday Concert Tour

Omara commences her Omara Portuondo 80th Birthday Concert Tour on September 23rd in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The tour will pass through Mexico, Colombia and the United States. In total there will be 15 concerts in just over a month. While in U.S., Portuondo will come back to the mythic Carnegie Hall in New York, this time will be as a spaecial guest of the African singer Angelique Kidjo. In mid-November Omara and Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club® will tour together in Europe for the second time this year. Austria, France, Switzerland and Spain will be the countries the Cuban musicians will visit featuring the famed Orquesta Bueana Vista Social Club® Featuring Omara Portuondo. December will bring together to the stage Omara Portuondo and David Murray, introducing the latest project of the American saxofonist, David Murray Cuban ensemble plays Nat King Cole en español featuring Omara Portuondo.

Jazz in Marciac is a festival in the south of France where the music flows between the vineyards and the sunflowers. It is a unique event, where one can enjoy great music under the stars of warm August nights.
To celebrate these special concerts, last year Jazz in Marciac decided to launch a collection of ” Live in Marciac”.

Chamber Music Society album release

Esperanza Spalding released her second album on the Heads Up label, Chamber Music Society, on August 17th. Chamber Music Society is Spalding’s follow up to the 2008 release, Esperanza, which sat atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart for over 70 weeks.
Backed by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and pianist Leo Genovese, Spalding draws from her classical training from her younger years and creates a modern chamber music group that combines improvisation with elements of jazz, folk and world music.
The album also features percussionist Quintino Cinalli, violinist Entcho Todorov, violist Lois Martin, cellist David Eggar and Gretchen Parlato on voice. Milton Nascimento makes a guest appearance on one track.

McCoy Tyner performed in Barcelona on July 23rd, accompanied by Gerald Cannon on double bass, Eric Kamau Gravatt on drums and Joe Lovano on saxophone. The show had really good response by the Catalan public, which enjoyed a “Concert full of great moments” (Quim Cabeza - Distrito Jazz).

The Orquesta Social Club® featuring Omara Portuondo are touring around Europe, a tour that began in early July and will last until late August. In November the Cuban musicians will come back to Europe to offer a six more shows with the same line up.

ELM Trio on tour in Europe

ELM Trio, the trio formed by Esperanza Spalding, the pianist Leo Genovese and drummer Francisco Mela will perform on August 4th at Jamboree Jazz Club, Barcelona. ELM Trio will offer three more shows in Europe, on August 8th at the Jardins do Palacio de Cristal in Porto, Portugal and August 10th and 11th at the jazz club Birdland in Helsinki, Finland.
