2019 Availability: June & July

Often referred to as a modern-day Miriam Makeba, JazzTimes saw fit to describe Somi's live performance as possessing “the earthy gutsiness of Nina Simone blended with the vocal beauty of Dianne Reeves,” while Billboard exclaimed that she’s “all elegance and awe…utterly captivating.”

She has collaborated and performed alongside artists including Mos Def, Baaba Maal, John Legend, Billy Childs, Paul Simon, Danilo Perez, Idan Raichel, Jennifer Hudson and many more, whilst the likes of Aloe Blacc, Common and Angelique Kidjo appeared on her most recent album “The Lagos Music Salon”.

Throughout 2019 and into 2020 Somi will be touring a very special project, Revolution Songs, which takes her two 2018 sold out performances (Protest and Memory at Lincoln Centre NYC) as their starting point - two concerts which focused on the repertoire of Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba. In the words of Somi herself:

“To me it is important to explore how we as women – as voices – can speak truth to power, individually and collectively. Nina and Miriam set extraordinary examples of unapologetically using their voices to incite social consciousness and revolution.  May we never forget their power, their voices, or their sisterhood.”
For Revolution Songs, Somi has developed the concept to include a variety of new songs by artists who can hold their own alongside Nina and Miriam, making for an inspirational, infectious and joyful evening, celebrating the power and strength of some of the most groundbreaking singers of our modern times.

Following on from the success of Laura Mvula joining the line up at Lincoln Centre, wherever possible Somi will draw upon her extensive contacts amongst like minded singers and instrumentalists to invite very special guests to join her stellar band on stage.

“What is freedom? No fear.”
Nina Simone

"I'm not a political singer. I don't know what the word means. I was singing about my life”
Miriam Makeba
