The Buena Vista Social Club were an international phenomenon, and yet the full band released only two albums: the bestselling 1997 studio set and a recording of their one US show in 1998, released 10 years later. Now, as the two surviving Buena Vista stars Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa prepare for their final UK tour, comes an album of “previously unreleased tracks”, and it includes two classics, both recorded during the original Havana sessions. The 22nd Istanbul Jazz Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), will be held from June 27 to July 15. Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca, who toured the world with the Buena Vista Social Club, will get together with Malian musician and singer Fatoumata Diwara for a warm and rhythmic Afro-Latin music night at the Feriye Restaurant on July 8.

It all began with a shared impression. After their first musical partnership, in 2011 in a Paris studio, they knew that 4 minutes and 32 seconds were not enough. Fatoumata Diawara and Roberto Fonseca are once again together. This time they release a new EP titled At Home (Harmonia Mundi) with some of the songs they performed last summer at Jazz in Marciac. The album will be released in Europe next April 21st.
Over the half-century of its existence, the association has been one of this country’s great engines of experimental art, producing work with an irreducible breadth of scope and style. The headline acts have been announced for this year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Jamie Cullum, again returning as guest director, will perform with trailblazing US jazz funk jam band Medeski, Martin & Wood. The festival has a reputation as one of the most forward-thinking of its kind in Europe and up-and-coming talent to take to the stage this year includes Anglo-French trio In Bed With, Swiss trombonist and composer Samuel Blaser and the Spanish singer and multi-instrumentalist Andrea Motis.
